On this day in 1965, SSG William R. Spates Jr. was killed in action while serving in Vietnam. SSG Spates was the first Tomb Sentinel to be killed in action.
On 20 February 1973, a dedication ceremony was held naming the Fort Myer NCO Club as “Spates Hall” in his memory. Below are photos from the dedication ceremony.
