On this day in 1964, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur died at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington, DC.

Over the following days, the State Funeral would honor MacArthur’s legacy with stops in New York City, Washington, DC and Norfolk, VA. President Kennedy had approved a State Funeral for MacArthur before his own death in 1963.
