On March 23, 1899, soldiers of the 3d Infantry Regiment disembarked the US Army Transport Ship “Sherman.” The Sherman arrived the previous day in Manila Bay in the Philippine Islands. The men of the Old Guard departed the Port of New York at the beginning of February.
The Regiment would spend their first night ashore camping in Luneta Park. The very next morning four companies (Cos. E, F, G & M) would march forward and engage the Insurrectionists the following day suffering losses of five men killed in action, fifteen wounded and one missing. The rest of the Regiment would join up by March 26.
